PROJECT SUMMARY

The EUnited project addresses the complex realities of Mediterranean migration, one of the most significant and long-standing challenges in Europe. The central Mediterranean route, connecting North African countries such as Morocco, Algeria, Libya, and Tunisia with Southern Europe, remains one of the most dangerous migration pathways globally. Migration along this route is driven by structural factors including economic insecurity, food shortages, and ongoing conflict across the MENA region.

Despite this complexity, public discourse in Europe often frames migration primarily as a security and border-management issue. This framing overlooks the human dimension of migration and the lived experiences of young North Africans who are forced to leave their countries in search of safety and dignity. Upon arrival in Europe, many continue to face discrimination, social exclusion, and a lack of representation in public discourse and policy processes.

EUnited aims to address these gaps by empowering young migrants through participatory PhotoVoice and digital storytelling methodologies. The project places young North Africans at the centre of knowledge production, enabling them to document and share their lived experiences through photography, video, and narrative reflection. In doing so, the project contributes to social inclusion, intercultural dialogue, digital skills development, and evidence-based policy engagement.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

The EUnited project is designed to achieve the following specific objectives:

Social inclusion and integration
To enhance the social inclusion of young North African migrants in European host societies by fostering understanding of their lived experiences, cultural identities, and resilience.

Digital skills development
To improve the digital competences of young migrants, enabling them to effectively use digital tools for storytelling, communication, and active participation in society.

Intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding
To promote dialogue between migrant and host communities by sharing diverse narratives and encouraging empathy, tolerance, and social cohesion.

Visibility and representation of migrant voices
To ensure that the experiences, identities, and cultural narratives of young North Africans are visible, recognised, and valued within European public discourse.

Awareness-raising and policy influence
To raise awareness among policymakers and the general public regarding the realities faced by young migrants, using participatory visual storytelling as a tool for advocacy and informed policy development.
